The Loop

Lion farms , Eco conscious system

1. Mushroom Cultivation as the Starting Point

The loop begins with gourmet mushroom production, primarily Lion’s Mane, cultivated year-round in a controlled environment facility.

Mushrooms are grown on sterilized substrates composed of:

Hardwood sawdust

  • Organic grains

  • Plant-based organic matter

Once harvested, these substrates commonly referred to as spent mushroom blocks retain significant organic carbon, structural material, and microbial potential.

2. Substrate Recovery & Pre-Processing

Spent mushroom substrate is:

Removed from production rooms

  • Heat-treated and stabilized

  • Pre-composted to balance moisture and carbon availability

This step ensures the material is biologically suitable for vermicomposting while reducing pathogen risk and promoting microbial consistency.

At this stage, no manure inputs are introduced.

Expense Tracking

3.Pre-processed organic material enters the vermicomposting system, where red wiggler earthworms (Eisenia fetida) and microbial communities drive biological transformation.

Within the system:

Organic matter is fragmented and digested

  • Microbial populations are reshaped through earthworm gut passage

  • Nutrients are converted into plant-available forms

  • Organic carbon is stabilized

This process produces vermicompost, a biologically active soil amendment rich in microbial diversity and organic matter.

Debt Reduction Strategies

Finished vermicompost is returned to the farm as a foundational soil input, supporting:

Food forest development

  • Nursery plant production

  • Orchard establishment

  • Soil regeneration across cultivated areas

Rather than relying on synthetic fertilizers, soil fertility is rebuilt through biological cycling.

This closes the nutrient loop within the farm.

Debt Reduction Strategies

Vermicompost is also brewed into vermicompost tea, allowing biological benefits to be distributed more efficiently.

The tea functions as:

A microbial inoculant

  • A soil drench or foliar application

  • A tool for restoring soil biology in degraded systems

This step extends the loop beyond the farm, allowing Lion Farms to support regeneration in home gardens, orchards, urban farms, and landscapes throughout the community.

6.Zero-Waste, Regenerative Design

Every major system at Lion Farms mushrooms, vermicomposting, agroforestry, aquaculture feeds into the next.

The result is:

  • Reduced waste

  • Lower external input dependency

  • Improved soil structure and resilience

  • A scalable model for regenerative agriculture

This loop is not static. It is continually refined through field observation, academic collaboration, and applied research.

Vermicompost 

Finished vermicompost is a stable, biologically active soil amendment produced through controlled decomposition. It improves soil structure, supports microbial life, and builds long-term fertility.

Vermicompost Tea

Vermicompost tea is brewed to extract beneficial microorganisms and soluble nutrients from finished compost. It is applied as a soil drench or foliar spray to support plant health and soil biology.

Brewing method, water quality, and application timing directly affect performance. Our process is designed to preserve microbial viability and deliver consistent results.
