How to Brew Worm Tea From Vermicompost or Worm Castings

What You'll Need:

  • 5-Gallon Bucket (clean, food-grade)

  • Lion Farms Worm Castings

  • Water (use dechlorinated water or rainwater)

  • Optional: Unsulfured Molasses (as a microbial food source)

  • Way to Aerate the Water (such as an aquarium pump with an air stone or a small air pump)

How to Brew Worm Tea:

  • Place about 4–6 cups of worm castings into your 5-gallon bucket.

  • Add about 4 gallons of dechlorinated water. If you need to dechlorinate water, boil the water for about 15 minutes to remove the chlorine. Another option is to use an aquarium air pump to bubble the water for 12–24 hours. You can also let it sit uncovered for 24–48 hours to allow the chlorine to naturally evaporate.

  • Optional if using aeration: Add about 1 ounce of unsulfured molasses – a food source for the beneficial microorganisms living in the worm poop/castings. Do not add molasses if you are not using an aerator, as this could encourage the growth of harmful microbes.

  • Insert the aerator or bubbler into the bottom of the bucket and turn it on to start providing more oxygen. If you don't have an aerator or air pump, try vigorously mixing the mixture several times a day to increase oxygenation.

  • Let the prepared mixture brew for 12–72 hours (1–3 days), stirring occasionally.

  • Do not exceed 3 days, as oxygen levels may drop and the tea could spoil.

  • Optional: Strain the worm tea before using it to remove any large particles.

How to Use Worm Tea:

  • Dilute the worm tea before applying so it's not too potent:

  • General use: 1 part worm tea to 10 parts water (1:10)

  • For seedlings or sensitive plants: 1 part worm tea to 20 parts water (1:20)

  • Diluting helps ensure it will help spread the nutrients more evenly and help with proper absorption.

  • Apply the worm tea to your plants with a watering can for soil drench, or a sprayer for foliar feeding.

  • For best results, use the worm tea as soon as possible after brewing. The living microorganisms are most active when fresh.

  • If you need to store it, keep the worm tea in a dark, cool location and try to use it asap.
