This work was conducted in collaboration with the Agroecology Program at Florida International University. Research was carried out by graduate researcher Daphne K. Sugino Souffront as part of applied field studies at Lion Farms.

Research-Informed Practice

Application strategies at Lion Farms are informed by applied research, graduate-level field studies, and on-farm trials conducted in collaboration with Florida International University. This work focuses on understanding how vermicompost and vermicompost tea interact with soil biology, plant systems, and management practices under real growing conditions.

Findings presented reflect specific study conditions and are not intended to represent universal outcomes. Results may vary based on soil type, crop system, and management practices.

At Lion Farms, vermicompost and vermicompost tea are applied using principles adapted from precision agriculture and 4R nutrient stewardship.

Our approach combines regenerative farming experience with applied soil science to ensure biology is introduced intentionally, efficiently, and in alignment with system goals.

Biological inputs are most effective when applied as:

  • Right Material

Selecting vermicompost or vermicompost tea based on soil condition and management objectives.

  • Right Rate

Applying biologically appropriate quantities that support microbial function without overloading the system.

  • Right Time

Aligning applications with plant growth stages, environmental conditions, and soil biological activity.

  • Right Place

Targeting the root zone, soil surface, or foliar environment where biological interactions occur.

Soils in South Florida present unique challenges, including low organic matter, high sand content, and rapid nutrient leaching under subtropical rainfall patterns. These conditions make biological activity and timing especially important.

Lion Farms operates within this regional context. Our consultation and application strategies are informed by on-farm experience, applied soil science, and work within South Florida’s climate, soils, and cropping systems.
